Report on the Annual Meeting of the
New Canaan Library Association
July 10, 2007

The New Canaan Library Association held its Annual Meeting on Tuesday, July 10, in the Library’s Curtis Gallery. Members of the Association, who are the Library’s donors and volunteers, were invited to learn of the year’s activities.

Library Director, David Bryant, opened the program by reflecting on the year just ending. “Library planning, programming and the enthusiasm of New Canaan readers for new books energized this exciting Library year. We added more than 18,110 items to our collections. This year, through a superb collaborative relationship with Elm Street Books we were able to bring 66 world class authors to the Library as part of our ‘Authors on Stage Series.’ We set the bar high and drew the interest of libraries throughout Connecticut, with adult attendance nearing 11,000.” He went on to say that New Canaan Library’s popular Attwood Memorial Lecture in May, featuring political analyst and writer, Tom Oliphant, drew a standing-room-only audience and that in November Tom Brokaw will most likely speak to a full house as the Richard Salant Lecturer.

Mr. Bryant remarked on the Friends of the Library and their contributions to quality programming: “Notes in Mid-Winter” concerts, art exhibits and demonstrations, programs for children, book and movie discussions, and the Library’s book sale. To the Library’s many supporters, Bryant said, “We value your trust, your interest, and your generosity.”

Mr. Bryant also expressed his appreciation and respect for “a very supportive Library Board led by President Tanis Erdmann, who took a deep interest in all things ‘library’-- here and in the wider world. Matters of intellectual freedom, our policies, our purpose and most of all, our future, came under review by our Board.” Throughout the year, “Library staff maintained its reputation for customer service and for 342 days of the year, we were open, welcoming, and full of intellectual content for lifelong learning.”

President's Message

Board President Tanis Erdmann thanked Mr. Bryant and his staff for the smooth and efficient operation of the Library. She also expressed appreciation for the Library’s donors and volunteers, whose gifts of time and money directly contributed to making the year a success. Mrs. Erdmann said that New Canaan Library has been a treasured Town institution for 130 years, now serving over 1,000 patrons a day, annually circulating almost 450,000 items and hosting over 800 book talks, classes, concerts, lectures, workshops, meetings and art openings. She explained that New Canaan Library, while still serving the reading and research needs of New Canaan, has evolved into the Town’s cultural center for exploring the world of ideas, current events and the arts.

Looking toward the future Mrs. Erdmann remarked that the 21st century will be a new age for libraries, as library usage patterns nationwide have changed greatly over the last few years. “Large reference collections have given away to banks of Internet terminals. Back issues of periodicals are available electronically rather than in dusky boxes or on microfiche. A card catalogue is a computer program, and many traditional library offerings are now available online, from home. We should expect further changes; e-books are just around the corner.” Today’s library needs less space for physical storage. Instead, patrons want classes and lectures, technologically literate services, a comfortable environment for study, and efficiency.

The Library Board has convened a committee to oversee a project that will result in a new space plan for the Library. Many changes are anticipated, including a “living room” for reading and gathering, an Internet Café with additional computers, and improved quiet spaces and collaborative study rooms. Mrs. Erdmann concluded, “These new facilities will be wonderful and will benefit everyone in our town. At the same time they are not optional or ‘wishful thinking’; they are what is needed to remain relevant. The basic functions of libraries are shifting, and only as a 21st library can we remain a popular culture center and a New Canaan cornerstone for another 100 years.”
