New Canaan Library: Where Book Groups Abound!
Reading, for many, is a solitary pleasure, but some of us love to discuss what we have read with others. We took some time recently to reflect on how we support reading groups in our community. Our Brown Bag Book Talks are ever popular. At these informal gatherings patrons get to exchange ideas with librarians who lead the discussion. Our Authors on Stage series gets people talking about books in a different way: with the actual authors. Both of these series are open to all who wish to attend. Our patrons belong to many book groups of their own, and our book group collection has an astounding 1073 titles in it.
The National Women’s Book Association recently designated October as National Reading Group Month. We joined in celebrating book groups when author Ursula Hegi came for a lunchtime visit and talk on October 24.
Many of our patrons who are in book groups ask for suggestions and advice. We are always happy to purchase titles for your group, and we will make recommendations for you, too. Did you know that there are also great online resources that will help you pick titles and lead discussions? We have printed a leaflet that lists resources for book groups. Please pick one up on your next Library visit.
