We were once all farmers. Today, hardly any of us is. Most worrisome to many observers is that Connecticut has lost the highest percentage of its farmland to development than any other state in the country. In 1944 there were 22,000 farms in Connecticut; today there are just 4,200.Connecticut farmers and the farming way of life helped to build the state, give sustenance to millions, and provide residents with a special sense of place. Agriculture is still a significant part of the state economy: it generates about $2 billion annually and employs about 50,000 people. There are still successful egg, dairy, vegetable and fruit farms in Connecticut, some farmed by the same families going back many generations. Now a new breed of farmers has jumped on the wagon with innovative ways to grow, harvest, and market an increasingly wide array of products… many of which are organically grown. This movie covers this history and provides an intriguing look at what’s happening today. There is no admission charge. Call 594-5000 to reserve seats or register online.
