NEW TRICKS
David Rosenfelt’s mystery series featuring Paterson, NJ-based defense attorney Andy Carpenter and his loveable golden retriever, Tara, have earned awards and acclaim. The first novel in the series, Open andShut, was nominated for an Edgar Award and the fourth, Bury the Lead, was a Today Show Book Club pick. Play Dead (2007) received high praise including starred reviews from both Publishers Weekly(“…riveting….No shaggy dog story, this puppy’s alive with reliable Rosenfelt wit and heart.”) and Booklist (“There is no way you can read this novel without becoming completely caught up in the story. As always, Andy’s offbeat, outspoken personality shines on every page, and the balance of humor and mystery is dead-on.”).
In his seventh case, NEW TRICKS (Grand Central Publishing; August 6, 2009; $24.99) Andy is ordered by the court to represent an adorable Bernese mountain dog puppy in a custody fight. The puppy’s owner was brutally murdered and Andy, whose affection for dogs is unrivaled, will do whatever it takes to insure that the little pup doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. However, his playful new friend possesses a deadly and valuable secret and a number of people are willing to resort to violence to obtain. It will take more than Andy’s usual courtroom theatrics to save this dog, including a little help from his beloved golden retriever, Tara. Andy soon discovers that everyone around him is in danger, including his long-time girlfriend, Laurie, and he will have to come up with some high-risk new tricks to save those he holds most dear.
