Baby teeth—also known as primary teeth, deciduous teeth, or milk teeth—are the first set of teeth that emerge in infants and young children. They're temporary placeholders for the adult teeth that follow, but they play a crucial role in a child's development. This little round table discussion covers the basics: what they are, when they appear, why they matter, how to care for them, common issues, and tips for parents. Whether you're a new parent or just curious, let's dive in!
Dr. Anna Simonis from New Canaan Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Julie Sweeney from Sproutwell Pediatric Integrative Medicine and Kristen Smaldone, a pediatric registered dietician, will give you some basics on the oral healthcare of your baby’s teeth from toddlerhood and beyond!
Dr. Julie Sweeney is a board-certified pediatrician and fellowship-trained integrative medicine physician. She is the founder of SproutWell Pediatric Integrative Medicine in Darien, where she helps families add evidence based holistic care to conventional medicine for whole-child wellness.
Kristen Smaldone is both a full-time mom and a full-time dietitian. She founded Kristen Smaldone Nutrition to help families support their children’s health from infancy through the teen years. With over 10 years of clinical experience and plenty of real-life parenting insight, she creates practical, family-friendly strategies that work for your child—and for your busy life.
