Event Details

New Canaan Library is pleased to celebrate poet and essayist Adele Evershed, a long-time attendee of the Library’s writing classes, as she shares her newest book, A History of Hand-Thrown Walls. This captivating collection of flash fiction explores the beauty and history of stone walls—those timeless, scattered landmarks found across Connecticut.

Spanning from pre-colonial times to pivotal historical moments and into a dystopian future, these richly imagined stories reveal the enduring presence of these structures in our landscape and imagination. Adele will read excerpts from her book, discuss the inspirations behind her work, and offer valuable advice for aspiring writers—especially those interested in publishing. "Small presses are not to be discounted," she notes.

About the Author: Adele Evershed was born in Wales and has lived in Hong Kong and Singapore before settling in Connecticut. Her prose and poetry have appeared widely in literary journals, and she has been nominated for Best of the Net (poetry) and the Pushcart Prize (poetry and short fiction). Her first poetry book, Turbulence in Small Places, was published by Finishing Line Press. Her novella-in-flash, Wannabe, was released by Alien Buddha Press in May, and her second poetry collection, The Brink of Silence, is available from Bottlecap Press.

About the Moderator:  Sam Grieves, a Cape Town–born writer now living in Connecticut, is published widely in literary journals, has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy, and was honored by the Rash Award for Fiction. A graduate of Brown University and King’s College, London, Sam has worked as a librarian, bookseller, and antiquarian book dealer. Recently, she has hosted Meet the Author, a summer interview series at Roton Point.
