Program Description

Event Details

With biting wit and unflinching precision, James Frey takes readers on a satirical thrill ride through the dark heart of privilege in his latest novel, Next to Heaven. Fans of The White Lotus and Big Little Lies will be captivated by the twists and turns of a narrative that exposes the treachery behind the American Dream.

Frey peels back the gilded surface of America’s wealthiest enclaves in this darkly funny, razor-sharp thriller set in New Bethlehem, Connecticut—a town of immaculate lawns, sprawling mansions, and the illusion of perfection. Beneath the designer yoga and curated Instagram lies a darker truth. Devon and Belle--beautiful, wealthy, unsatisfied--are desperate to feel something beyond the monotony of luxury. They orchestrate an exclusive party for New Bethlehem’s elite, and the guest list is a who’s who of moral compromise: an ex-NFL quarterback clawing at relevance, a hockey coach with a weakness for forbidden affairs, and a Wall Street predator who treats wealth as a weapon.

Frey will be in conversation with actor, singer, writer, and musician Gina Gershon, well known for her role as a predatory bisexual character in the 1995 film Showgirls. She is also widely recognized for her portrayal of Corky in Bound (1996), and her roles in Face/Off (1997) and Sinatra (1992). Additionally, she has a notable career in film, television, and stage, including supporting roles in shows like FX's Rescue Me and HBO's How to Make It in America

Elm Street Books will be on site for book sales and signing.
