Our Town Charter determines how responsibilities are distributed, decisions are made and accountability is enforced in New Canaan’s municipal government. Join us to learn about our local government and what issues are being discussed for this current revision, from term limits, appointed vs elected positions, community representation, and more.
The powers and duties of the Selectmen, Town Council, Board of Finance, Board of Education, Planning and Zoning, Ethics Board, Parks and Recreation, Public Works, and Public Safety commissions (among others) are outlined in the Town Charter. Every 10 years, the New Canaan Town Council votes to establish a Charter Revision Commission of 11 members to recommend potential revisions to the articles within the Charter. Members of the public are invited to participate either in person at the Commission meetings or via a link to the Public Information Form: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8QXBNNK
Kathleen Corbet, a 30-year New Canaan resident, will speak in her capacity as Chair of the Charter Revision Commission. She has previously served on the Board of Selectmen (2020-2023), Town Council (2013-2017), Board of Finance (2006-2010), and on the previous Charter Revision Commission (2015-2016). She has also served as chair and member of the Waveny LifeCare board (2019-2022).
This program is co-sponsored by the New Canaan League of Women Voters.
