Program Description

Event Details

In the first program of our new World Music Series, master musicians Ranendra Das (tabla) and Satyaki Dutta (sarod) will take us on a musical journey that is millennia in the making. Prepare to be transported by their intricate, complex rhythms and deeply resonant sounds as we listen and learn about this rich musical tradition. This program is co-sponsored by the India Cultural Center.

Tabla is a North Indian instrument that consists of two drumheads made of goatskin. Sarod is a North Indian fretless melodic instrument originating from the lute family with eight main strings and fifteen additional sympathetic strings.

Ranendra Das was born a musician; while still in his mother's womb, his father sang Bengali Folk Music and recited taals (musical compositions) to him. Ranendra's formal tabla training began at age 3 and has continued ever since. He has been teaching and performing tabla professionally since 1996. Ranendra graduated cum laude with his Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of Bridgeport and earned his MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College. Ranendra founded PARA Academy of Music and Arts, LLC in 2018.

Satyaki Dutta is a Sarod artist representing the Sarod Gharanas (schools) of Shahjahanpur. He had the privilege to learn from the legendary Sarod maestro of Senia-Shahjahanpur Gharana Padmabhushan Pandit Buddhadev DasGupta and also took his initial lessons from Sri Panab Naha. He is a member of Westchester Musicians’ Guild and a rostered artist at NYC-based Concerts in Motion, which brings personalized live music and engagement to older adults, veterans, Holocaust survivors, individuals with disabilities, and individuals with mental illness of all ages.
